Unity Concerts and Special Services
Join us Wednesday, February 21. 2007 as we consecrate the
beginning of the Lenten season, which is our time of spiritual
preparation
for Easter. Rev. Margaret will give special Lenten blessings
to each individual, and those who wish to participate in a
renewing practice, will be given a “Lenten Covenant.”
Lent is traditionally a time of prayer and fasting in preparation
for the joyous celebration of Easter. Although Lent isn’t
mentioned in the Scriptures, it does have a sound spiritual basis.
Moses, Elijah, and Jesus all observed a period of prayer and
fasting in preparation for spiritual work.
In Unity we look at the practice of fasting as a retreat from
negative thinking. Just as fasting from food cleanses the body,
so fasting from negative thinking rejuvenates and purifies the
mind and spirit. As we carefully consider our thoughts, words
and actions during Lent we make way for the resurrection of our
minds from the darkness of false belief into the light of spiritual
understanding.
We are encouraged to observe Lent not merely according to the
letter, but according to the spirit. We can fast from criticism,
judgment and condemnation, focusing instead on love and forgiveness.
As we give up thoughts of disease and weakness, we feast on the
truth of God’s perfect life. Fasting from belief in lack
or limitation, we prepare for God’s omnipresent good.
